For years the Blue Goose Cantina has been a Dallas Tex-Mex tradition that we were introduced to on our last trip to the Big D. We had an opportunity to get away from our conference for lunch and found the Blue Goose on Urbanspoon with an 86% approval rating. Not bad for a lunch spot and it was only a few blocks down the road (away from the horrible traffic on the construction zone know as the Lyndon B Johnson Freeway).
The exterior is blue with a prominent blue goose on the sign showing us that they are serious about their goose. We did drive past it and had to back track through a parking lot next door but we arrived safely. Upon entering, service stayed very attentive from the door, to the table and through to the check.
Inside was very … Mexican restaurant looking with lots of light bulbs and pastel, especially blue. A tortilla machine was prominently displayed in the dining room verifying the freshness of the chips. The salsa was fantastic with a bit of chipotle going on. I’d go back just to eat the chips and salsa. No generic bag and can stuff going on here!
The Blue Goose describes themselves as “the freshest and most delectable Tex-Mex (we start chopping and cooking EVERY morning at 7am)”. The food did taste fresh and we enjoyed our lunch. Knowing we’ll be back to Dallas and that we have plenty of choices, we made a pact to revisit Blue Goose.
My Blue Goose Taco Salad with mesquite grilled chicken ($8.95) was perfect. A large tortilla shell-bowl filled with mixed greens, grated cheese and diced tomatoes served with sour cream, guacamole and choice of signature dressings: jalapeno ranch, creamy chipotle or cilantro lime. I couldn’t decide between the ranch and chipotle dressings so requested both and mixed them. I loved everything about this salad – fresh, flavorful and filling. That’s what you call the important 3 Fs of dining.
My father-in-law had the Blue Goose Special ($8.95) with two beef enchiladas and one beef crispy shell taco served with rice and refried beans. The Blue Goose claims that this is a house favorite and I’d have to say that my f-i-l would agree whole heartedly.
My wife and mother-in-law ordered the Chimichanga a la Blue Goose ($8.95) which should begin to clue you in to the theme at this point. The chimichanga was a choice of beef or chicken with refried beans and cheeses folded into a 10 inch flour tortilla and lightly fried. It is then smothered with ranchero sauce and served with rice and refried beans. Again, no left overs were taken back to the room from this luncheon.
The margaritas are popular at the Blue Goose as well. While I was the only one at the table to take them up on it for lunch, it definitely hit the spot. It’s not a large margarita by any means but that made it ideal for my lunch.
Yes, if you’re in Dallas and have a free lunch I recommend stopping in at the Blue Goose Cantina and ordering your favorite item off the menu. Don’t forget to save space for the margarita!
