Charles Gardet founded this Champagne house in 1895, the same year his son Charles was born. In the 1920s, Charles moved the enterprise to Chigny-Les-Roses in the esteemed Montagne de Reims; where it resides today. The business has been led by the family with regard to the traditions and high standards they have always held.
Champagne Gardet uses grapes from the family vineyards in Montagne de Reims, over 7 hectares or about 18 acres of Premier Cru vines. They also use grapes from other superior growers in the Côte de Blancs and Montagne de Reims regions. The family insists on high quality fruit with the knowledge that great wines begin with great grapes.
Gardet Champagne realizes longer time on the lees than the standards of Champagne law require. For the vintage Champagne instead of the minimum of three years it will see about four years on the less. Even then it will be held in the cellar for another three or four years before being released.
The Gardet style of fragrant, mature Champagne with a finesse and balance that sets it apart makes Gardet Champagne a sought after sparkling wine.
The Gardet Champagne Prestige Charles Millésimée 2004 is 70% Chardonnay, primarily from the Grand Cru and Premier Cru Côte des Blancs and 30% Pinot Noir from Premier Cru Montagne de Reims vineyards. It did not receive malolactic fermentation to allow this vintage to be stored longer.
It has a beautiful golden straw hue that sparkles with a radiant patina. The aroma is of fresh lemon and orange zest and peach but as it progresses, ripe pear accents appear. On the palate, the wine confirms the citrus and fruit notes along with creamy toasted brioche and vanilla while white floral and peppercorns highlight a penetrating minerality. The balance of this Champagne emphasizes its elegant structure and offers a satisfying length to the finish.
I believe that Gardet Champagne Prestige Charles Millésimée is as good if not better than other well-known vintage Champagnes and its available at almost half the price! It may not have a rap star bragging about it but for my money this is my vintage Champagne of choice.
