Grove Park Inn Welcomes Vue 1913

The Omni Grove Park Inn’s newest dining brand is Vue 1913, an American Brasserie in the location where Horizons’ restaurant used to be.  While white tablecloths still adorn the tables, they will soon disappear when the new Arts & Crafts style wooden tables arrive.  You can still wear your coat and tie but by no means are you required to do so any more with the new theme.

Service is still some of the best in town and the wine list takes back seat to no nearby location, even though it has been reduced a little during the two recent acquisitions of the Resort.  I understand that they intend to continue the awards they currently have (AAA Four Diamond Award, DiRoNA Award and Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence).

1/2 dozen Oysters ($18.):  Blue Points that were fresh and perfect
While the burgundy padded seats are gone along with the silverware sporting the Horizons’ ‘H’, the setting is still comfortable with a view of the city and mountains that brings visitors from around the globe.

The menu is on one over-sized page with enough classic dishes to make you book a new reservation before you even begin the meal.  Use of local products along with house-made pastries and desserts merely add to the overall appeal of the new cuisine.  Blue Point Oysters on the half shell, Clams Casino, Escargot, Steak au Poivre, Bouillabaisse and Lobster Agnolotti to name a few.

Clams Casino ($14.) - hard to find dish these days that
was delicious and good to the last drop of sauce.
We met friends at Vue 1913 for a little pre-Christmas celebration and get together.  Since it was a Tuesday we had our godson, Kaleb with us as well.  He’s a bit of a picky eater and quite frankly eats chicken fingers most of the time.  I know, I can’t seem to do anything about it though.  The staff didn’t bat an eyelid and were very polite about providing chicken fingers and fries for my boy.  Thank you!

Blue Crab Salad ($17.) offers Bibb lettuce, citrus segments,
pomeranate seeds and inviting Blue Crab.
We decided to treat ourselves and pay to park in the garage (we thought about valeting but Kaleb had his backpack and we didn’t want him to drag that through the entire Resort).  On the way to the garage we found an open parking spot near the entrance to the Sammons Wing!  We have named that section of five or so parking spots Hollywood parking – we felt special, haha!

Of course it is always nice walking through the hallways of the Grove Park Inn during the Holidays with all the festive trees and decorations, not to mention the Gingerbread House displays in every window.  It really is impressive to see those works of art from kids and adults across the country.  The work and talent that goes into them is unbelievable!  Sorry, I didn’t take the time to photograph any of them so you’ll just have to stop in and see them for yourself.

Steak au Poivre ($38.), large and tender strip steak
crusted with whole and cracked peppercorns.
You better be hungry if you order this dish!
The menu really is difficult to order from with so many timeless standards that we took our time deciding and then ordered from all over the menu.  Prices are Resort prices so a little high but I am planning a return visit so I did see it as worth it.  After all, I pay about the same at some of Asheville’s other local dining spots without the view that Grove Park Inn lends to the experience.

I give Chef James Lumley, a fairly new addition to the Grove Park Inn Culinary team, high marks for a phenomenal dinner.  Each dish was as beautiful in presentation as it was tantalizing on our palates.  I felt Chef delivered incredible quality throughout the evening.  I was truly amazed at the size and tenderness of the strip used for the steak au poivre but that gave me a good reason to share it with others at the table!

Apple Tart Tatin ($9.), mouth-watering slow roasted apples with vanilla crème fraîche.
One of the amazing house-made desserts that will put your dinner experience over the top.
Yes, I recommend Vue 1913, add this to your list of new Asheville restaurants to hit.  You won’t be disappointed.  For you wine geeks out there, ask the staff if they have time to give you a cellar tour – it’s kind of cool.
