Wildflour Bakery and Gourmet Restaurant - Abingdon, Virginia

While staying in Mountain City, Tennessee at Prospect Hill B&B Inn, we wanted to take the short drive into Virginia to the Virginia Creeper Trail and asked the Innkeeper for recommendations for places to eat near the trail.  One of those she mentioned and gave glowing remarks about was the Wildflour Bakery and Gourmet Restaurant.  After hiking a portion of the trail, we drove into Abington, Virginia to Wildflour for lunch.

The restaurant is run out of a two story house that has enough age to give it some character.  The paint peeling off the walls belies the quality of service and food we received.   There’s more going on here than first may meet your eye.  The house-made pastries and baked goods are waiting to tempt you in a display case that you’ll see as soon as you enter the restaurant.  We made it past those, but just barely, and were sat in what must have previously been the living room of the house.  It is nicely decorated and features local art throughout the rooms.

The server welcomed us and told us the specials for the day.  Surprisingly my wife ordered the soup of the day which I didn’t think would interest her.  We shared a cup of Pumpkin Coconut Milk and Curry Bisque ($3.50).  Creamy and aromatic without being spicy, we polished off the soup hitting the spot on a chilly day.

My wife ordered a burger with Gouda and bacon ($9.), no surprise on this one – she loves a good burger.  The server warned us when she asked for a burger that it would take 17 minutes to cook it.  The ground beef is grass fed beef and they slow cook them to ensure optimum flavor.  The burger was appetizing and well worth the wait.  The sandwiches all come with chips and salsa along with a pickle spear.

I requested the Black & Bleu ($9.), a sandwich of blackened roast beef, caramelized onion, grilled mushrooms with blue cheese crumbles on rye bread (I substituted with wheat bread – I’m not a big rye bread lover).  This was a delightful mouthful with a depth of flavor that is a bit unexpected in a sandwich.  You betcha, I’d order this one again, loved it!

Friendly service, quaint surroundings, good food and the promise of mouth-watering pastries – I do recommend Wildflour and hope you like them as much as we did.
