Matt Danford opened Blue Mountain Pizza about a decade ago with the vision of good food, service and entertainment at reasonable prices. The local entertainment each night is free and features talented local musicians. The newest facet of Blue Mountain is their own brewery adding one more brewpub to the Western North Carolina ranks. I’ve heard good things about this place for a while and finally made it in for dinner with friends recently.
Knowing that I am a big fan of Chicago deep dish pizza (not to mention other styles of pizza as well, but Chicago deep dish has old roots with me), a friend invited my wife and I to join his family for dinner. We met at 6:45pm on a weekday night and found the place packed. A table was reserved for us and we took our seats next to the small corner stage.

Miles checking on our pizza - haha! |
Discovering that one of Blue Mountain’s current brew offerings is a Belgian Dubbel, I ordered that immediately. The only thing I didn’t like about the beer was that I spilled half of my first glass in my friend’s lap. I wasn’t as worried about his pants – they’ll dry – as I was about losing half a glass of this wonderful beer. A dark amber with a smooth full-bodied taste that was easy to love. The beer is balanced with malt and a hint of banana showing very little obvious hops. It’s a real treat that I would reorder any time.
We started with an order of garlic knots. I was shocked at the size of these knots, as big as large rolls! Everyone ate these up with the sauce that comes with them so fast that the only deduction I can see is that they are great! For the kids we ordered a thin crust pepperoni and a Stromboli. Both were perfect and again I was amazed at the size of the Stromboli, it is not for the faint of heart. Massive, cheese-filled and scrumptious is the conclusion.
We ordered a couple 14” Chicago style pizzas of course. No one seems to want to try and recreate this stuffed masterpiece of a pizza outside of Chicago – so kudos to Matt for having the brass to make it happen. While they aren’t as cheese-stuffed as the original, they were a brilliant reminder of this style of pizza. I couldn’t stop eating it and overstuffed myself in the process. I give it a pleasant two thumbs up!
Blue Mountain Pizza and Brew Pub not only offers great food and beer but is very community minded. Since opening in 2004, they have given over $75,000. to local charities. Join them on the third Thursday of the month where they donate a portion of their revenue to a local charity. Also, on Thanksgiving Day they offer a FREE Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 3pm to anyone that is alone or in need on this special day.
Blue Mountain also serves up white table cloths for a fine dining meal on the third Monday of each month. For the pre-fixe amount of $50.00 (not including alcohol, tax and gratuity), Chef of the evening Mike Vanhoose, a graduate of the A-B Tech Culinary program, creates a four course dinner for guests. To attend you have to pre-order and place your reservation on their website while seats are available (only 20 seats available per dinner).
What an interesting and diverse place that Weaverville offers. If you’ve been a fan – congratulations, you’ve done well. If you’ve never been to Blue Mountain, please add it to your wish list because I do recommend them.
